What is the difference between NREMT AEMT and NREMT Paramedic?
The AEMT provides limited advanced life support: IV/IO access, fluids, supraglottic airways, and a short medication list. The Paramedic is the full ALS scope: cardiac monitoring and 12-lead interpretation, the complete prehospital drug box, intubation, surgical airway options in many systems, and far deeper pathophysiology. The training gap is large, AEMT adds a few hundred hours to EMT; paramedic programs run 1,000+ hours and often award college credit or a degree.
Can I take both the NREMT AEMT and the NREMT Paramedic?
Paramedic supersedes AEMT, nobody maintains both. The genuine both-scenario is temporal: work as an AEMT for a year or two in a rural service, then attend paramedic school with meaningful field experience behind you. That sequence produces strong medics.
Which should I take first, NREMT AEMT or NREMT Paramedic?
Both require EMT first. After that, choose by destination: if your system employs AEMTs and you need income while building experience, AEMT is a reasonable middle step. But AEMT coursework rarely shortens paramedic school, so if ALS practice is the goal and you can commit to the program, EMT → Paramedic directly is the efficient route.
