What is the difference between NREMT AEMT and NREMT EMT?
The EMT exam covers basic life support. The AEMT exam covers everything at the EMT level plus limited advanced interventions: intravenous and intraosseous access, fluid resuscitation, supraglottic airway devices, and an expanded medication list (D50, glucagon, nitrous, nebulized bronchodilators and a few others depending on protocol). AEMT courses typically add a few hundred hours on top of EMT, a meaningful step, but far short of paramedic training.
Can I take both the NREMT AEMT and the NREMT EMT?
AEMT includes and supersedes the EMT scope, so you certify upward rather than hold both. If paramedic is your actual goal and your area supports it, many people skip AEMT entirely, EMT → paramedic is the more common career path, and AEMT coursework does not usually shorten paramedic school.
Which should I take first, NREMT AEMT or NREMT EMT?
EMT first, AEMT programs require it. Whether to add AEMT depends heavily on where you work: rural and volunteer systems that cannot staff paramedics lean on AEMTs and will fund the training; many urban systems run EMT/Paramedic ambulances and barely recognize the level. Ask your agency before spending the tuition.
