The Bottom Line

The NCLEX-RN is the stronger long-term play: broader scope, higher pay, and every advanced nursing path runs through it. The NCLEX-PN and LPN licensure make sense as a faster, cheaper entry, especially if you need nursing income within a year, with well-worn LPN-to-RN bridges afterward.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between NCLEX-PN and NCLEX-RN?

The NCLEX-PN licenses practical/vocational nurses (LPN/LVN) after a program of roughly one year; LPNs provide bedside care under RN or physician direction, concentrated in long-term care, rehab, and clinics. The NCLEX-RN licenses registered nurses after a two-year ADN or four-year BSN; RNs assess, plan care, push IV medications, supervise LPNs, and work every setting including ICU and ER. Both exams use computerized adaptive testing; the RN exam tests deeper clinical judgment and management of care.

Can I take both the NCLEX-PN and the NCLEX-RN?

The RN license supersedes the PN in scope, so nobody maintains both by choice. The both-path is sequential: LPN → bridge program → RN, which is a well-supported route, many bridge programs grant advanced placement for LPN experience.

Which should I take first, NCLEX-PN or NCLEX-RN?

If you have been admitted to an RN program and can afford the time, go directly to RN, the LPN detour adds a licensure cycle without shortening most RN programs much. Choose PN first when speed to paycheck matters, when RN program waitlists are long in your area, or when an employer funds LPN-to-RN progression.
