Exam Comparison
NPTE-PT vs OTR
Comparing the NPTE, Physical Therapist and the NBCOT Occupational Therapist Registered (OTR). Both fall under Allied Health & Medicine. Both are covered by the Allied Health Exam Prep app.
The Bottom Line
PT versus OT, the classic rehab-career fork: physical therapy restores movement, strength, gait, mobility; occupational therapy restores function, the daily activities that make life work, with a scope reaching cognition and mental health. Similar settings and pay bands; profoundly different clinical lenses. Shadow both before you choose a program.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between NPTE-PT and OTR?
The NPTE-PT licenses physical therapists (DPT degree), whose work centers on movement dysfunction: orthopedic rehab, neuro re-education, gait, pain, and physical performance. The NBCOT OTR exam certifies occupational therapists (master’s or doctorate), whose work centers on occupation, dressing, cooking, working, driving, including cognitive, visual-perceptual, and psychosocial rehabilitation. In a stroke unit, the PT rebuilds walking; the OT rebuilds mornings: bathing, dressing, making breakfast. Both professions enjoy strong demand.
Can I take both the NPTE-PT and the OTR?
Essentially nobody holds both, the dual education would be redundant where the professions already collaborate daily on the same patients. If you are torn, observation hours in each discipline settle it faster (and cheaper) than any comparison page.
Which should I take first, NPTE-PT or OTR?
Exam order is moot, the graduate degrees diverge from day one. Choose PT if biomechanics, exercise, and physical performance are what fascinate you; choose OT if function, adaptation, and the cognitive-psychosocial side of recovery pull harder. Program cost and length are comparable; setting flexibility is high for both.
Does C3RT cover both the NPTE-PT and the OTR?
C3RT is building apps for both the NPTE-PT and the OTR. Both will be available on iOS and Mac.
