What is the difference between Network+ and Security+?
Network+ certifies networking fundamentals: subnetting, routing and switching, wireless, network services, and troubleshooting methodology. Security+ certifies baseline security competence: threats and attacks, identity and access management, cryptography basics, risk and compliance, and security architecture. The decisive practical difference is DoD 8140 (formerly 8570) approval: Security+ satisfies baseline requirements for a huge swath of U.S. government and defense-contractor positions; Network+ does not open comparable doors.
Can I take both the Network+ and the Security+?
Taking both is reasonable for infrastructure-track careers and CompTIA stacks them naturally. For security-track careers, the higher-leverage pair is Security+ now and CySA+ later, treating Network+ as study material rather than a required badge.
Which should I take first, Network+ or Security+?
Security is networking-dependent, you cannot reason about firewalls, segmentation, or attacks without understanding the network underneath. If your networking is shaky, learn Network+ content first; whether you pay for its exam is a separate question. Candidates with solid networking from work or homelab experience should go directly to Security+.
